use of multi tracking?
use of loops?
use of the "studio as an instrument"?
first gatefold album
popularised singer songwriters?
helped push fwd amplifier companies to manufacter gear that could be overheard over screaming fans?

the band were only around a few years - only played live until for half that time

they were fucking FREAKS and PIONEERS - go and sniff on some glue my friend all you want, but you can't deny their HUGE influence on modern pop music

“No group has come near pushing the boundaries of the Beatles”

Some people do say some very stupid things. The Beatles produced their work in an era when a lot of things were changing fast, particularly studio technology but also culture ( it was the fucking 60s for fucks sake). They also straddled the period from 7” singles to 12” albums and the wider acceptance of working class popular music by the mainstream.

The idea that they were unique or exceptional is utter nonsense. They were a fucking hugely successful pop band.

mashed - i think he'll be remembered but not for his music. more for the way music consumption has changed.
like it or not he was a benchmark for a new artist and how to reach a wider audience in a new and innovative way.

Will Beiber be remembered in 60 years time, to the extent that just about every student music bar in Europe you walk into will have a poster of him on the wall or people travelling from round the world to visit where he was born and played his first few gigs?

Re: The Beatles
funniest thing about Barlow was when he pushed out Williams and then shut the band down thinking people were interested in him as a solo artist, haha. a very rich man though, so I'm sure he's not too worried about anything I have to say 😂

Re: The Beatles
Compared to the UTTER SHIT boy bands have churned out from the 90's onward, The Beatles were genius personified.

Fuck you Barlow!

Re: The Beatles
love the beatles, and it's a testament to their talent that they were creating some of their best stuff (my favourite, anyway) like Abbey Road almost at the end. they could play live as well as anyone

Obviously on different paths Surf son.... like I said I think the Beatles live were a bit ropey and not a touch on the Who's performances... if you think otherwise... cool.. I can live with that...

Re: The Beatles
No group has come near pushing the musical boundaries like the Beatles!

Sgt Pepper is a work of genius, that was so good it gave Brian Wilson, driving force behind the Beach Boys, a nervous breakdown as he knew he could never compete with that.

Dylan is a fantastic lyricist but basically a folk singer, the Stones have a few decent guitar riffs and a charismatic front man. At least The Who tried to push the boundaries with Tommy and Quadrophenia!

Yes.

I'm still not sure why you are trying to pretend that the fact they they did some covers has got anything to do with what they were like live.

I'm not quite sure what the fact the Who are shit now Moon and Entwistle are gone has to do with anything either. I presume the Beatles wouldn't be so good without John and George - especially at 80.

Not my favourite group (in fact I don't have one) but if like me you were around when Love Me Do hit the airways in 1962 you will appreciate just how they changed the Pop scene back then.

And their version of Twist and Shout should please most hammers

Every single argument is pointless.

That's why it's fun to argue.

Re: The Beatles
Music arguments are pointless, as we've all got different tastes.

Clearly an excellent band who have stood the test of time, but they still wouldn't make my own personal top 10, regardless of the fact I like loads of their songs, as I just like music from that era.

Got tickets for a ska event in garon park this August and I'd rather go to that and see From the Jam and Bad Manners etc than see the full Beatles line up live, simple as that.
